This paper aims to critically appraise two research articles based on the topics - “Pressure ulcers and their treatment and effects on quality of life: hospital inpatient perspectives” and “Randomized clinical trial comparing Hydro-fiber and alginate dressings post-hip replacement.” The first article compromises the study about analyzing the perception and experiences of patients along with the impact of pressure ulcer their quality of life. In the second article, the comparison regarding the performance of Hydro-fiber and alginate dressings, which are used in the treatment of primary hip wounds, is included.
ARTICLES` ANALYSIS
Aim of the Papers
The title of first paper clearly states research question, and points out key variables, which are the two dressings that are going to be compared. The main features of the report are summarised in the abstract. Results and conclusion are clear. This type of research usually requires a quantitative approach as there is a numerical data to be examined. Researchers state it is a randomised clinical trial, a non experimental research.
The Topic of wound care, discussed in both of the articles, is highly relevant to nursing practice. Skin integrity is of paramount importance for prevention of infection and patient comfort. The article regarding the topic of Pressure ulcers is a qualitative research paper. This paper reports a study exploring patients' perceptions and experiences of the impact of a pressure ulcer and its treatment on their health and quality of life. Qualitative semi-structured interviews were carried out from 2002 to 2004 with a purposive sample of 23 hospital inpatients (five men, 18 women: aged 33-92 years) with a pressure ulcer (graded 2-5) at various anatomical sites and with varied reasons for hospital admission. Data were analysed thematically.
Methodology Used
The type of methodology used to gather the results is primary. Feedback is obtained through customer focus groups, customer usage and attitude surveys, detailed telephone, mail, and personal interviews. The sampling process generally involves one of the principle confusion areas, which would be an issue not resolved by the inadequate level in which it has been covered in the section of literature. In a qualitative inquiry there are no established rules for sample sizes and thus its outcomes will depend on factors such as what the researcher aims to find out, the purpose of this inquiry, what's at stake, what involves credibility, what are the useful factors or what can be made out of the available resources and time.
It is a useful strategy to select a sample study in the process of undertaking a research project mainly due to it benefits of being practical, ethical and efficiency, especially when it comes to studying whole nations or populations. Questionnaires and Surveys are the most reliable and common methods for marketing research. Generally, they are used to obtain the patients views and their quality of life after getting affected with the diseases and wounds..
